About this work
Two domestic turkeys share a close-cropped double portrait, one larger and angled toward the viewer in the left-of-center foreground, the other smaller and set back to the right. Only their heads, necks and upper chests appear, set against an unbroken plain background with no horizon or setting.
Soft, even light brings out the bumpy texture of the pink-red wattles, shaded with dusty blue-grey around dark eyes, and the warm iridescent edges of the dense, dark bronze plumage. The paint is applied in visible, semi-impasto strokes, with loose directional brushwork in the background, giving the pair an alert, gently comic charm.
