About this work
A row of three whitewashed cottages with black shingled roofs, brick chimneys and glowing windows stretches across the picture. In front, a line of children in pointed witch hats, a ghost sheet, a black-cat costume and a hooded black cape walk along a white picket fence, each with a jack-o'-lantern candy pail, while a small black cat trots behind.
The dusk light is flat and soft, with only the lit window squares and a large pale full moon as strong accents. Bare trees and small silhouetted bats fill the dusky grey sky.
The flat, naive composition and slightly wobbly, hand-painted lines read as folk art, while thick dry-brush impasto, visible canvas weave and deliberately imperfect strokes add texture to the rooftops and foliage.
