About this work
A continuous row of narrow canal houses with stepped and bell-shaped gables fills the width of the frame, seen straight on in a flat, frontal view. Four golden-leaved autumn trees stand at even intervals before the facades, setting the rhythm of the scene, while small potted plants and low shrubs sit at the entrances and fallen leaves scatter across the quiet cobblestone street.
The light is soft and hazy, like dusk or an overcast autumn afternoon, with a warm glow in the windows. Thick impasto strokes and palette-knife texture build the clouds and foliage in a loose, impressionistic manner, in a palette of dusty terracotta, slate, cream, blush and muted gold.
