About this work
Looking straight down a New-England-style village street, rows of white clapboard houses and picket fences line both sides while a distant church steeple closes the view. Bare, sparsely leaved branches arch overhead, and rust-orange leaves and small pumpkins rest along the road and roadside.
The dusk light is soft and overcast, with warm amber pools spilling from window panes, porch lights and black wrought-iron lamp posts. A painterly haze softens the far steeple and trees, and thick brushstrokes with palette-knife texture keep the scene expressive rather than photographic.
