A small black kitten with large amber-gold eyes sits upright in a garden, close to a carved jack-o'-lantern whose candlelit face glows from within. Behind them a weathered wooden trellis, overgrown with climbing vines, spans the upper part of the scene.

Peach and blush chrysanthemums, rust-colored leaves, small berries and dense green underbrush fill the foreground, seen from a low, close-to-the-ground viewpoint. Soft daylight and loose, impressionistic oil brushwork blend the fur and foliage into one another, and the effect is charming rather than spooky.
