About this work
A split purple fig, a golden pear, a deep red-and-green pomegranate cracked slightly open and a loose bunch of green grapes sit casually across a tabletop, scattered in a horizontal cluster in the lower middle of the frame. Each fruit is reduced to bold, flat geometric shapes of color rather than modeled realistically.
Behind them, uneven horizontal bands of mustard yellow, teal blue, maroon and terracotta, cream and plum purple form a patchwork ground. Thick, visible strokes and flat, even light let color and brushwork carry the picture, in the spirit of Cézanne and Matisse, playful and quietly confident.
