Full-bloom, cosmos- and poppy-like flowers in burnt orange, marigold, burgundy and terracotta rose mass across the lower two-thirds of the canvas, thinning into a few tall, wiry stems and unopened seed pods. The open upper third leaves airy negative space against a warm ivory ground.

Thick palette-knife impasto gives the petals ridged, raised edges that catch soft shadow, and the coarse, plastered canvas ground shows through the background. The light is even and diffused, the finish matte and painterly.
