About this work
A large moon moth spreads its wings at the center, each wing patterned with crescent-moon eyespots and delicate leaf motifs, its antennae feathered and fern-like. Above it, a crescent moon and scattered small stars fill the dark space, while dense sprays of wildflowers, including yarrow-like blooms and small daisies, arch around the edges.
Worked in chunky yarn on black fabric, the piece has raised, dimensional stitching, with directional stitch strokes radiating outward to suggest fur, feathers, petals and leaves. Oatmeal cream, umber, dusty rust and sage olive stand out softly against the black in a mystical, nocturnal composition.
