About this work
A white New England church with a tall steeple presides over a snow-covered village common, while a large Christmas tree strung with lights and ornaments stands in the square. Carolers in dark winter coats move down the snowy street, townspeople walk in small clusters, and a horse-drawn sleigh and a few deer share the scene.
Pale golden light breaks low through grey clouds, softening the snow-blanketed colonial rooftops and bare trees at the edges into a gentle haze toward the distant hills. Thick palette-knife and brush strokes leave visible ridges of paint in the snow and sky, giving the nostalgic, communal scene a tactile canvas texture.
