About this work
A single white sailboat sits on still water in the middle of a calm New England harbor, its reflection stretching in loose horizontal strokes. Pine and hardwood-covered rocky points enclose the bay on both sides, and a white clapboard house sits on a grassy point in the distance.
Dense white hydrangea shrubs and garden foliage crowd the bottom edge, framing the view from close range. Soft, hazy daylight warms the far shore and leaves a pale glow near the horizon, suggesting early morning or late afternoon.
The painting has a plein-air feel, with loose brushwork and thick impasto dabs on the blooms and foliage set against smoother, blended sky and water.
