About this work
A single dark bay or black horse stands in full side profile toward the left of a wide canvas, facing left with its head bowed toward the ground. Open background surrounds the figure and spreads to the right, with only a faint shadow beneath the hooves, and white-socked lower legs emerge from the dark coat.
The paint is loose and gestural, with dense, dark strokes in the mane and forelock and a long tail that shares the same dripping brushwork. Where the near-black coat meets the lighter ground, edges are scumbled and softly dissolved, leaving the figure slightly unfinished and sketch-like. Soft, directionless light moves the coat from near-black to warm brown, and thin, almost wiped washes in the background contrast with heavy texture on the chest and haunches.
