Two adults and a small child walk away from us down a snowy forest path, and the child holds one hand out toward a golden retriever trotting beside them. Dark spruce boughs heavy with snow frame the trail, and the pale trees fade into a bright, misty distance.

The snow is painted in thick, sculptural strokes of white and grey, with footprints pressed into the foreground. Navy, olive and chestnut coats and the dog's warm gold stand out against the cool winter whites. The mood is calm and companionable.
