A friendly, softly smiling ghost in a tall pointed witch hat flies through the center of the scene, gripping a broomstick. Beneath it a broad valley opens out, with a winding river, dry autumn bushes along its banks, layers of pine forest and hazy mountain ridges receding toward the horizon. Small bats scatter across the sky.

Dense fine-line cross-hatching and stippling build the shading, with crisp silhouettes for the pines and bats against the softer hatched sky. A muted burnt-orange moon or sun glows low through the haze, and a dry, watercolor-like wash in parchment, sage and ink tones ties the whole drawing together.
