About this work
Eight simple ghosts, each a draped sheet with two small black oval eyes, stand packed together across the full width of the canvas. They vary in height and overlap slightly, rising from the lower third into the upper two-thirds, with deep dark space left above and around them. One ghost toward the back right is fainter and more translucent, melting into the background as if it were further away or more fleeting than the others. Loose, gestural dark smudges at their feet suggest patchy grass.
The light is soft and even, with no hard cast shadows, and gentle tonal shading gives each sheet its form. Warm ivory and dusty taupe stand out against near-black charcoal, ink black and muted umber. The paint is worked in loose palette-knife and brush strokes, with thick ridges in the folds and woven canvas grain showing through the thinner dark passages. The result feels gentle, nostalgic and a little whimsical.
