A dark horse runs through deep snow in the middle of the scene. Behind it a small farmhouse with a red chimney sits on a rise among bare trees. Swirling grey-blue clouds fill the sky, with patches of cream where the light breaks through.

The paint is laid on thickly. Palette-knife ridges build up the snow and clouds. Along the foreground, flat folk-style blooms in burgundy, slate blue and mustard stand out against the white ground and add some warmth to the cold scene.
