About this work
A small ghost in a plain cream sheet stands slightly right of center in a forest clearing, beside a carved jack-o'-lantern with a wide toothy grin resting on a leaf-strewn path. The pumpkin's warm glow spills over the ground and the lower fold of the sheet, the strongest light in an otherwise dark wood.
Dark tree trunks and an arch of rust-colored leaves enclose the clearing, with a pale crescent moon glimmering through a gap in the canopy and smoky mist drifting low across the ground. Painted in the manner of a romantic nineteenth-century landscape, with thin glazed darks, feathery foliage strokes and an aged-varnish matte finish, it feels moody, hazy and gently eerie.
