A lone ghost in a white sheet, its eyes two black hollows, walks down the middle of a rain-slicked cobblestone street and carries a glowing jack-o'-lantern. Victorian houses with steep gables and wrought-iron fences crowd both sides, and candle-like flames light their windows.

A heavy gray sky and pale fog swallow the far end of the street, where a row of street lamps fades into mist. Orange autumn leaves lie scattered over the stones and cling to bare branches. They are the only strong color and echo the pumpkin's glow. Thick, visible brushwork gives the scene a moody, painterly texture.
