About this work
A loose cluster of tall, slender bare trees stands slightly right of center in a marshy meadow, with low scrubland and dried reddish-brown grasses in the foreground. A distant tree line fades into a hazy, overcast sky, and a faint pale glow lies along the low horizon.
The light is diffused and shadowless, and depth comes from soft tonal recession rather than sharp perspective. Loose brushstrokes and soft impasto in the foliage and grasses contrast with smoother, blended strokes in the sky, giving the oil painting a quiet, tonalist feel.
