A lone fir tree, strung with tiny warm lights and crowned with a gold star, rises from the darkness at the center of the canvas. The lights glow like embers among the branches, and a few pale flecks drift through the air around it like snow.

The background is built from thick, scraped strokes of umber, soot and deep brown. Their rough surface makes the quiet glow of the tree feel more intimate.
