A wide, slow river runs between wooded banks. Layered grey clouds with faint cream openings fill most of the sky. The foliage is soft-edged and heavy, in deep mossy greens that nearly merge with the shadows.

The water carries mirror images of the trees and the pale sky. Everything is muted and close in value, with a fine, aged-canvas texture. It has the stillness of a classic nineteenth-century landscape.
