About this work
Hydrangea flower heads in mixed stages of bloom fill almost the entire frame, from fresh mauve-pink blossoms to dried tan and rust-toned ones. Large heart-shaped leaves in muted sage green and faded tan sit among them, and only small pockets of dark mahogany-brown background show in the upper corners.
The close, frontal view builds depth through overlapping flower heads and leaves. Soft, muted light blends the clusters into one another, and the petals are made from loaded, dabbed oil strokes with an impasto-like texture over visible canvas weave. The mood is nostalgic, romantic and autumnal.
