About this work
A violin lies at an angle across a polished table, its scroll and tuning pegs catching a patch of golden light from the left. Beneath it, a deep red velvet cloth falls in heavy folds, and aged sheets of music, headed Orchestral, lie open in the foreground.
Behind the table, a carved wooden sideboard, a brass candlestick and a corner of a gilded picture frame sink into warm shadow. The paint is rich and smooth, in the manner of a classical interior study, with glowing amber highlights against dark browns and the crimson of the cloth.
