About this work
A cracked-open pomegranate sits at the center of the table, its glossy red seeds packed in pale pith. Torn quarters rest to the left and two whole, russet-skinned fruits stand to the right. Loose seeds are scattered across the pewter plate and the wooden ledge.
A pinecone and dark leaves rise from the shadows behind them. A gold-handled knife lies on heavy charcoal silk, its folds catching glints of gilt thread. Warm light picks out the fruit and leaves the rest in near darkness. Fine cracks across the paint surface give it the look of an old master canvas.
