About this work
A single wrought-iron lantern sits right of centre on a drift of snow, its lit candle sending warm light through the glass. Pine boughs, small pinecones and clusters of dusty red berries gather around its base, while soft flecks of snow fall through the dusk.
The left two-thirds of the canvas is left open, a hazy field of warm taupe and smoke gray that fades toward softly vignetted edges. Loose oil brushwork, visible canvas weave and soft impasto dabs in the snow contrast with the smoother, more controlled lantern, giving a quiet, wintry and gently nostalgic mood.
