About this work
Seen from an elevated, gently downhill vantage point, a snow-covered village street recedes toward a soft vanishing point. Close-set, snow-laden timber-framed cottages with steep gabled roofs and tall chimneys line both sides, and the eye is drawn to a distant church spire.
Twilight blue settles overhead, while warm amber lamplight and window glow pool on the snow at street level. Evergreen trees are strung with small warm lights, a few small figures walk the glowing street, and pale flecks of snow drift through a faint atmospheric haze that softens the steeple and rooftops.
The oil painting is loose and expressive, with impasto brushwork and palette-knife strokes shaping the drifts and rooftop snow.
