About this work
A dense, edge-to-edge line of snow-laden pines fills the lower two-thirds of the frame, their overlapping silhouettes stacking to suggest depth. Above them, a single glowing eight-pointed star hangs near the center of an open, dusky sky, acting as a gentle source of light, while soft snowdrifts bank at the base of the trees.
The palette is dusty slate blue, olive and sage greens, and soft snow white, with touches of muted gold. Heavy palette-knife work forms the chunky needles and snow clumps in high relief, and swirling, circular knife-drags in the sky give the quiet twilight a tactile, hand-worked feel.
