A St. Bernard with a bowler hat and cigar, a bulldog in a green visor, a collie with a monocle and bow tie, a beagle in a flat cap and a pug in a waistcoat sit around a green felt table. They hold their cards close, and each has a different, serious expression.

A brass lamp lights the table, which is covered with poker chips, glasses of whiskey and a few more cigars. Smoke curls into the dark, wood-paneled room, where a mirror and a pendulum clock hang on the walls. The old-fashioned oil painting style gives the humorous scene a warm, theatrical feeling.
