About this work
A solid black horse strides from left to right in full side profile, its body overlaid with a stylized ivory skeleton: a beaded spine, a cross-hatched rib cage and jointed ball-and-socket leg bones. The head is rendered as a pale, bone-like pattern with a dark eye socket, a striking contrast with the smooth black neck and loose, textured tail.
Behind it, the backdrop splits into two tones of tiled rectangular patches, muted olive-khaki above and dusty peach-clay below, built up with thick, visible brushstrokes into a quilted field. Heavy-body oil paint with a matte, chalky finish and even, gallery-style light give the naive, folk-art piece a quietly eerie, earthy charm.
