About this work
A loose pen-and-ink or graphite landscape study in which two windswept deciduous trees and a large weathered boulder crown a grassy rise on the right. A path curves up the slope in short directional strokes, while the left third opens to a faint sky and a low, distant tree line.
There is no cast shadow or directional light; tone comes entirely from line density, with tight cross-hatching and stippling in the canopies and rock thinning to barely-pressed contour lines in the sky. Paper grain and faint age spots add to the quiet, nostalgic, unfinished-study feel of a 19th-century academic sketch.
