A single branch sweeps diagonally across the page, hung with five plump lemons and pointed olive-green leaves. Fine pencil lines and cross-hatching describe the bark, the leaf veins and the shadowed undersides of the fruit.

Soft washes of mustard yellow and sage green add colour without hiding the drawing beneath. The mottled, parchment-toned background gives the study the feel of a page from an old naturalist's sketchbook.
