About this work
Two cream-white stags stand in mirrored profile, facing inward on either side of a tall, snow-heavy fir. Their large branching copper-tan antlers spread wide and reach high into the night, softly stylized rather than photographic, with slender legs and black hooves. A band of snowy ground fills the bottom of the scene.
A soft, even moonlit glow lifts the pale snow against the deep blue sky, which is scattered with tiny snowflakes, star-like dots and a few larger six-pointed snow stars. Thick, ridged impasto and short directional palette-knife strokes build the fur, boughs and snow, with swirling movement in the sky.
