About this work
A snow-covered ridge rises on a diagonal from the lower left, topped by two or three tall pines just left of center. The right side of the picture is left as open, empty sky, giving the scene a spare, hushed feel.
Washes of watercolor or gouache bleed softly across the sky and snow, with drier brush marks describing the pine boughs and the ridge line. The light is flat and overcast, and the muted taupe, cream and ochre tones read as if seen through cold winter air.
