About this work
A hare faces the viewer directly, its tall ears lit warm amber from within and its dark eyes watchful. Small flecks of snow cling to its ears, fur and whiskers.
The background is loose and energetic, made of broad slashing strokes in slate and charcoal. Golden grass stalks and white snow clumps in the foreground echo the colours of the animal's coat. The hare is rendered with fine detail, and the setting around it dissolves into bold, gestural paint.
In the painting
