A wide, open sky fills the upper half of this alpine scene. A towering cumulus cloud with warm peach-lit edges rises just right of center above a distant snow-dusted peak. A dark olive, cone-shaped mountain stands at the left and a steep green hillside climbs at the lower right. Between them a V-shaped valley leads the eye toward the far range.

Layered ridgelines recede from dark, warm foreground hills to pale, bluish peaks in the haze. Soft late-day light rakes in from the right, touching the cloud and the pale rock faces while the slopes fall into broad, quiet shadow. Sparse dry grasses and scrub dot the lower left ridge, and no figures or buildings appear.

Painted like an early 19th-century plein-air oil study, it has a visible linen weave, a thinly scumbled sky with fine craquelure, and loose, broken strokes on the rock. The muted, matte finish feels aged, serene and contemplative.
