About this work
A large herd of horses, mostly dark bay and black, runs across the full width of the canvas in overlapping side-view silhouettes. Legs blur with motion and manes are only loosely suggested, while the herd layers from foreground to background and fades into dusty haze on the right. One pale, cream-colored horse near the center is the only strong contrast against the dark mass.
Painted in oil on woven linen, the picture has soft, smudged brushwork, an aged patina with faint mottling and worn patches, and strongly visible canvas grain. Warm sepia, umber, charcoal and antique cream, lit by soft, even light, give it a sun-bleached, moody, quietly powerful feel.
