Dozens of bats with spread, veined wings fill the sheet. The nearest are dense black and brown. The ones behind them fade into pale gray-blue ghosts, which gives the flock depth and movement.

The background is a cream wash with tea-colored stains, feathery ink blooms and thin drips running down from the bottom edge. The paper's soft texture and the transparent layers of pigment give the picture a vintage naturalist feel.
