About this work
A loose, informal bouquet of poppies, roses, daisies and small sprays of tiny blossoms spreads across the wide canvas, its trailing stems and leaves thinning out into the dark background. With no vase in sight, the blooms read as a floating mass of color, built up from overlapping layers of paint.
Soft, diffused light falls from slightly above, warming the central and upper flowers while the lower stems sink into deep shadow. The contrast between the near-black ground and the glowing blooms recalls an old-master 17th-century Dutch or Flemish floral still life, with a subtle varnished patina. Loose impasto dabs form the flower heads, set against thinner, scumbled paint behind and fine dry-brush lines for stray stems and grasses.
