About this work
A broad bay stretches out beneath a buttery peach and golden sky, its still water tinted lavender and streaked with the last warm light. Green headlands slope down to the shore in layered, hazy planes, with pale chalky cliffs breaking through the hillside.
In the foreground, a bare tree and shrubs in rust, orange and ochre stand over a meadow of dusty mauve grasses and tiny wildflowers. Thick impasto strokes in the sky and loose, textured dabs in the foliage over a visible linen canvas grain give it the quiet, nostalgic feel of a plein-air oil painting.
