About this work
An elevated view sweeps across a broad autumn valley, where patchwork fields and split-rail fences give way to hills turning rust, gold and olive. A small steam train trails white smoke across the valley floor while cattle graze the open pasture, and a pair of deep red trees anchors the foreground.
Soft overcast light flattens the shadows and lets layered ridgelines fade into a pale, hazy mountain range. The cloud-filled sky fills the upper half of the scene, and a winding river catches a gentle glow.
Painted in the manner of an academic nineteenth-century oil landscape, the canvas weave and blended skies contrast with dabbed, textured brushwork in the foliage, for a quiet, nostalgic pastoral mood.
