Tightly packed trees fill the frame edge to edge, their foliage in burnt orange, dusty rose, golden mustard, sage green and pale cream. Slender, pale birch-like trunks rise vertically through the canopy, and a narrow patch of pale sky breaks through at the top center. At the shadowed base, small red-capped mushrooms hide in the undergrowth.

There is no visible horizon; depth comes from stacked planes of overlapping color. Soft, diffused light gives a dappled forest glow, and thick palette-knife and loaded-brush impasto leaves each dab of color distinct, blended only at the edges.
