A black dog stands in soft painterly silhouette among tall golden marsh grass, right of center, gazing toward the horizon. Beside it a broad, still lake fills the middle ground, reflecting an overcast sky, while rolling moorland hills fade into mist beyond.

The light is diffused and shadowless, leaving only a gentle glow along the water. Depth comes from stacked horizontal bands of grass, water, hills and sky, all handled in heavy palette-knife impasto whose thick ridges catch the light.
