A rabbit faces the viewer with wide dark eyes and long, upright ears. A whole carrot with feathery green tops is held crosswise in its mouth. The fur is built from short dabs of cream, peach and white, and the insides of the ears are touched with mustard and rose.

The soft grey background is scraped and layered into raised, crackled-looking ridges. These give the painting a sculptural surface that contrasts with the playful subject. The mood is cheerful and gently humorous.
