A black-and-white tuxedo cat sits propped upright against a stack of pillows, holding a small storybook open in both front paws. Its black back and head contrast with a white chest, chin and muzzle, and its green eyes are absorbed in the book. The cat and its book form the focal point at the middle-right of the scene.

Around it, floral pillows in cream and dusty sage rest against a dark wood headboard, and a beige-and-white gingham quilt covers the lower half of the bed. At left, a wooden nightstand holds a glass vase of white daisies and a mustard-yellow teacup and saucer, balancing the composition.

Thick, visible brushstrokes and impasto texture run throughout, with soft blended edges and a matte, painterly finish. Against the muted ochre wall, the warm cream, gold and brown tones give the picture the calm of a lazy morning.
