About this work
Big, overlapping dahlia and peony blooms in burgundy, terracotta and blush-cream crowd the wide canvas, with a few small wilted heads and curling stems trailing between them. The arrangement is asymmetric, with no single focal point, set against a warm cream ground.
Each petal is a raised, hand-shaped form of thick knife-worked paint, with gentle shadow gathering in the recesses between them. The light is soft and matte, and a subtle canvas tooth shows through the muted background.
