A male cardinal sits on a thick, snow-covered branch, and its saturated red plumage and black mask stand out against the pale surroundings. Heavy mounds of snow are painted in broad, creamy strokes along the bark.

Behind the bird, the evergreens soften into a cool, misty haze of blue, grey and teal. The scene feels still and clear, with one small point of vivid colour set in a calm winter forest.
