A cream-coated dog sits upright and alert, facing forward, while a tan-and-white dog lies beside it on a sunlit patch of dirt. Both are painterly and simplified rather than photorealistic. Behind them a dense wall of dark teal-green orchard leaves, studded with clusters of muted orange fruit, fills much of the picture.

A dirt path winds back between the trees toward a hazy, pale gap of sky. Soft, dappled daylight filters through the canopy with no harsh shadows.

Loose impressionistic brushwork gives the foliage dabbed impasto highlights, while the dogs and the ground are handled with smoother strokes.
