About this work
A stylized rider in a pale straw hat and a long brown coat sits in profile atop an elongated, spotted horse. Both figures are drawn with spindly, simplified proportions. The horse is cream and white with large, irregular chestnut patches, and its mane is painted in loose, textured strokes. The rider holds long, doubled reins that loop down to the bridle.
The pair walks left to right across a flat, near-abstract field of muted sage green, with no horizon line. A fringe of wild grasses and small white wildflowers runs along the bottom edge. The light is soft and even, and the thick palette-knife and brush strokes leave the coarse canvas tooth showing through the matte paint.
