About this work
Wildflowers crowd the lower two-thirds of the canvas in a dense, edge-to-edge band: daisy-like blooms, small dahlia-like flowers and sprays of tiny buds in terracotta, buttercream, honey tan and bone white. Dried seed heads and wispy stems thread upward into the dark field above, and a few taller stems keep the top of the composition from feeling static. There is no vase and no single focal bloom.
The flowers seem to emerge from shadow rather than being lit directly, with the darkest values pooling between and behind them. Heavy-body oil paint is laid on with brush and palette knife, leaving impasto ridges and knife-scraped strokes on the petals against thinner, glazed passages in the background. The effect is romantic, nostalgic and gallery-elegant.
