About this work
A pale, slick-haired man with pointed ears and round dark sunglasses reclines on a cushioned wooden lounger, holding a red cocktail with a little paper umbrella. His black swim trunks are printed with bats. A black-and-cream striped parasol arches over him. It is a deadpan joke about a vampire on holiday.
Beyond a stone balustrade, a turquoise bay glitters in the sun. A hillside village of white and terracotta houses sits on the far shore, and tiny figures wade and sunbathe on the beach below. Potted olive trees and a bougainvillea in full bloom frame the scene.
The paint is laid on thickly in short, buttery strokes. Cream, aqua and sandy tones give it a bright, breezy look, and the dark parasol and swim trunks supply the contrast.
