About this work
A sandy path curves from the foreground through loose meadow grass toward a rising hillside, where a small cluster of thatched-roof cottages sits among scattered trees. Two slender deciduous trees anchor the left side, and the horizon sits low, leaving most of the picture to a vast sky.
The sky is the heart of the scene: a large, dramatically piled cumulus formation rendered in loose, glowing strokes of warm cream against dusty blue. Soft aerial haze and fading detail carry the eye back to the horizon, and the light is gentle and diffused, without harsh shadows. In the manner of a 19th-century Barbizon pastoral, the brushwork is visible and soft in the sky and more textured in the grass and foliage, under a muted, aged patina that gives the whole scene a serene, timeless calm.
